At sunset on Sunday, 11 November bell tolls 100 times

The Buckhorn community and parishioners are invited to join in tolling of church bell to mark 100 years since end of World War I (1918-2018)

Greetings to each of you,

As you may know, 2018 marks 100 years since the end of World War I (The Great War).

For this solemn and momentous occasion, Archbishop Fred Hilts, Primate of the Anglican Church of Canada, has invited parishes throughout Canada to toll their bells 100 times at sunset on Sunday, 11 November 2018. This is to remember the sacrifices of those who gave their lives by serving their country in that time of hostilities. It is also to give thanks for the peace we enjoy in our days and to pray for peace throughout the world.

St Matthew - St Aidan will participate in this nationwide tolling of bells at sunset (4:50 pm) on 11 November.

Members of the Buckhorn community, families and friends, are invited to join with parishioners in the tolling of the bell. We will allot number of tolls to each person depending on the number of people present.

  • Please gather at the church no later than 4:40 pm
  • Tolling of the bell will begin at 4:50 pm and will toll 100 times

On behalf of the parish, I extend this invitation to you, your family, and friends. Children are warmly invited and most welcome to participate.

Blessings and Peace to you,

Glenn Empey, Parish Priest

Thank you Father Glenn for leading us and members of this small and caring community in this symbolic tribute to those who made sacrifices 100 years ago. The sound video is an eerie reminder as We Remember and a warning Lest We Forget.

Thanks for your help in spreading the word. It was good to see neighbours from the community and the young children in attendance. I am glad we took part in this special Onservance with other churches across Canada.

    Rev. Glenn
How amazing the Tolling of the Bell with our parishioners.
    Plus singing O Canada.
The Prayers you said were just beautiful.
Ray and I put on the video and listened to the guns Then
When the guns were finished to hear birds singing. How wonderful.
May we all live in PEACE.

      Hi, Olive and Ray,

The sound clip is very eerie and moving. I am glad you were able to listen to it. We had a very respectable turnout to observe the Centenary of the Armistice at sunset. I was thinking that many, many of those who served in the First World War would have come from small towns across Camada like Buckhorn. So, it was very fitting that we gathered as a small group of our community to toll our bell in tribute to them and in thankfulness for their sacrifices.

Blessings of Peace to you both,
