Amazing Loonie Dinner Auction
Over eighty guests packed Hartley Hall for the Annual Roast Beef Loonie Dinner Auction on 26 October 2015. Tickets were sold out as soon as they were made available which indicates the continuing popularity of this event for the Buckhorn and parish community.
Ticket sales and processing were ably managed by Eunice Blakeley and Helen Minten.
Assisted by an able team of volunteers from the Breakfast Programmes, Marylou Bowles, Peggy Roberts, and local Chef Doris Hillier, prepared an amazing fall feast — roast beef with all the trimmings.
John Britton from Lakefield, in attendance for the first time remarked, “Wow, the food was amazing. I had been expecting an institutional-type meal and this absolutely exceeded all my expectations. It was absolutely delicious.” Needless to say our chefs know what they’re doing. On top of that, it was John’s “39th” birthday and the entire hall joined in singing ‘Happy Birthday’ to wish him well.
Janice Wuerch, John’s wife and Social Worker with Pine Ridge School Board, brought greetings from Lakefield District Intermediate and Secondary School and provided up-date information about the future of the school.
Nearer to home, Mary Lou Wright, Principal of the Buckhorn Public School, expressed her great appreciation for the support of the local Breakfast Programme and shared examples of how this initiative makes such a positive difference in the lives and the learning of pupils at the school.
One very special person present for the evening, ‘Breakfast Betty’, echoed these comments. She added details of the daily routine at the Buckhorn Breakfast programme.
Doug Pearson — auctioneer par excellence — was the highlight of the evening. His lively style was great entertainment and encouragement in the bidding process. A thousand thanks to Doug!
Thanks to the volunteers from the Breakfast Programmes including students from both schools. The parish also extends most sincere thanks to all local merchants and individuals who provided items for the silent and live auction. The selection was absolutely wonderful. Thanks to Nancy Fairweather and Marion Watson for heading up this part of the event.
As Doug mentioned, the most important thing about the Loonie Auction event is the cause it supports. Thanks to the generosity of the Buckhorn community and support of community volunteers, the parish is able to provide significant funding for the local Breakfast Programmes at the school where local children attend.
Blessings and thanks to everyone!
